Consumer Automotive Repair
This course is for any student, male and female, who plans on owning or operating a automobile and would like to save money and be confident when dealing with salespeople and repair technicians. This is a fundamental course so no previous experience or background knowledge is needed. Topics covered include buying new and used cars, leasing, auto insurance, what to look for in an automotive repair shop, how to communicate effectively with an auto technician, and how you can save money by doing repairs yourself and properly maintaining your vehicle before costly repairs become necessary. This class is designed to instill confidence in the consumer and ease the worry of being taken advantage of in a repair situation.
Automotive Technology 1
This is the introductory level automotive course where students begin to explore the basics of the automotive world. The first part of the class is spent in the classroom learning about career paths, fundamental automotive principles, preventive maintenance, hand tool and diagnostic equipment, engine theory and design, and safety in the automotive shop. The remainder of the year is spent on lab job demonstrations and in the shop allowing students to put their new-found knowledge to work and gain practical hands on experience working on a variety of automotive systems including the cooling, lubrication, tire and wheel, starting, charging, and other electrical systems.
Automotive Technology 2
This is a second level automotive course in which students spend time learning and working on automotive brake systems and the fundamentals of basic hydraulic systems. While this course deals primarily with the function, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance, of disc, drum, and ABS brake systems, students also have time to complete other general maintenance and diagnostics tests they in the automotive fundamentals course. In the second semester students will develop skills in diagnosing, servicing, and repairing the different components that make up the steering and suspension systems. Topics covered in class include front and rear suspensions, basic and electronically controlled hydraulic power steering systems, four wheel steering, and wheel alignment geometry.
Automotive Services
Students are expected to complete repair orders in a timely and professional manner and clearly communicate with customers about the work they have accomplished. Responsibility, reliability, punctuality, and performing quality work are all stressed throughout the course. Students are expected to also have projects of their own to work on if customer work is slow. This is students' chance to gain experience on a specific vehicle system or job they have personal interest in while under the guidance of a certified instructor to help them accomplish the task.
Automotive Youth Apprenticeship
This class is divided between the school classroom and an offsite work experience. Students are employed by a local automotive business and earn money as well as school credit. This is a senior capstone class that puts the students' classroom knowledge to work in a real world setting and allows the students to build their resumes. Air-Cooled Engines
Air-cooled engines class allow students to explore the outdoor power industry in the small engines field and expands the focus from not only engines but to equipment as well. Equipment covered includes all types of lawn and garden machines, go-karts, ATVs, snowmobiles, personal watercraft, and outboards. Students learn to maintain and repair drive & transmission systems, suspension, starting, charging, and other electrical systems. This is a fundamental course, so no experience or background knowledge is needed. This class deals with the design, function, repair and maintenance of small engines.
